Open documents from file share with Office Web Apps 2013

You can use the new Office Web Apps 2013 Server not only for opening/viewing documents from SharePoint 2013 but also to open files directly from a URL or a file share.
The link has to look like the following:

http://webappsserver/op/view.aspx?src=<UNC Path to file or URL of file>

If you do not want to build the path manually, there is a web page that does the generation of the URL or the <embed>-Code for you:

http://webappsserver/hosting -> redirects to: http://webappsserver/op/generate.aspx

Important: Make sure that the machine account of the web apps machine has the appropriate rights on the file share or URL!

Worth noting you'll need to set 'OpenFromUrlEnabled' for your Office Web Apps farm in order for this to work. ("Set-OfficeWebAppsFarm -OpenFromUrlEnabled" in an elevated PowerShell did it for me).

Thanks, Body!

This is AMAZING! Can we also edit them? :)

That does only work manually but not from e.g a SP Search Result, as this produces a file:// URL for files on shares that Office WebApps cannot handle.

Is there any workaround to the file:// URL limitation when search results are returned from our file shares?

What is your favourite kind of apple pie? Is it apple?

Hi  Hintner, Thanks for sharing this. We can copy Permanent URL for MS Office documents on SharePoint and share with different users. When I share a link of document which is on 2 exposed on two different sites then following issue occurs:
If a user A has access to both sites then by clicking on the permanent URL opens a search page displaying document title under results instead of a document on office web app. If user B has access to only 1 site where the document is uploaded then it will open the document directly in office web app. Issue is with user A because the claim is that it should open a document directly. Can you please assist
